What Is Traditional Processing
Not Every Business Needs a Fee Recovery Program
Traditional card processing means the business absorbs the cost of accepting cards. The goal is not to eliminate that cost, but to ensure you are paying the lowest rate possible for your transaction mix. Interchange-plus pricing, the right processor, and periodic rate reviews are the tools Monument uses to keep your processing costs as low as possible.
Pricing Structures
Pricing Models
Understanding how your processor charges you is the first step to knowing whether you are paying a fair rate.
Interchange-Plus Pricing
Transparent cost-plus pricing tied to actual interchange rates
Most Transparent
- You pay the actual interchange rate set by Visa and Mastercard, plus a fixed markup
- The markup is the same regardless of card type or transaction method
- Rates vary by card type. Rewards cards cost more than basic debit cards.
- Statements show exactly what each transaction cost and what the markup was
- Generally the lowest effective rate for businesses with consistent volume
- Best for businesses that want full visibility into what they are paying
Best for: established businesses with consistent monthly volume
Flat-Rate Pricing
One predictable rate applied to every transaction
Most Predictable
- A single percentage rate applies to all transactions regardless of card type
- Easier to forecast monthly processing costs
- Easier to forecast monthly processing costs
- May cost more than interchange-plus for businesses with a favorable card mix
- Common with software-bundled payment solutions and startup-friendly processors
- Best for businesses that prioritize simplicity over optimization
Best for: lower-volume businesses, startups, and software-integrated payments
THE PROCESS
How Monument Evaluates Your Processing
01
Statement Review
Monument reviews your current processing statement to understand your effective rate, pricing model, card mix, and monthly volume. This is the starting point for any pricing evaluation.
02
Pricing Model Assessment
We determine whether interchange-plus, flat-rate, or your current tiered structure is the most cost-effective approach for your transaction mix and business type.
03
Processor Selection
Monument works with multiple processors and is not tied to a single provider. We select the processor and pricing structure that fits your volume, business type, and integration requirements.
04
System Configuration
We configure your terminal, POS, or payment gateway with the correct merchant account settings, card type handling, and reporting parameters.
05
Ongoing Rate Monitoring
Monument reviews your processing statements periodically and advises if your rates have drifted or if a pricing adjustment would reduce your effective cost.
The Monument Difference
What Sets Monument Apart
Processor-Agnostic
Monument works with multiple processors and is not tied to a single provider. We recommend the processor and pricing structure that fits your business, not the one that pays us the most.
Statement Analysis
We review your current processing statement before making any recommendation. Many businesses are paying more than necessary on tiered or legacy pricing structures.
Rate Optimization
For B2B and corporate card environments, Monument implements Level 2 and Level 3 data enrichment to qualify transactions at lower interchange rates.
Accessible Support
Monument remains available after setup. If your rates change, your business changes, or you have questions about your statement, we are a phone call away.
Not Sure Which Pricing Structure Is Right for You?
Monument reviews your current processing statement, evaluates your options, and recommends the structure that fits your business. No pressure. No assumptions.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about how Monument works, what solutions fit your business, and what to expect from the process.
Still have questions?
Monument is happy to walk through your specific situation on a call.
What is interchange-plus pricing?
Interchange-plus pricing means you pay the actual interchange rate set by Visa and Mastercard for each transaction, plus a fixed markup that goes to your processor. The interchange rate varies by card type: a basic debit card costs less than a premium rewards card. The markup stays the same regardless of card type. This structure is the most transparent because your statement shows exactly what each transaction cost and what the markup was.
Is flat-rate pricing ever a good option?
Flat-rate pricing can be a good fit for lower-volume businesses, startups, or businesses using software-integrated payment solutions where simplicity and predictability matter more than rate optimization. For higher-volume businesses with a favorable card mix, interchange-plus pricing typically results in a lower effective rate. Monument evaluates your situation and recommends the structure that makes the most sense for your operation.
What is wrong with tiered pricing?
Tiered pricing sorts transactions into qualified, mid-qualified, and non-qualified buckets, with the processor controlling which transactions fall into which tier. Rewards cards, keyed entries, and card-not-present transactions are often downgraded to higher tiers, resulting in higher costs. The structure is difficult to audit and hard to compare against other pricing models. Monument generally recommends moving away from tiered pricing when a better alternative is available.
How does Monument review my current processing rates?
Monument reviews your current processing statement to calculate your effective rate, identify your pricing model, and understand your card mix and monthly volume. From there, we can determine whether your current structure is competitive or whether a switch to interchange-plus or a different processor would reduce your costs.
What is Level 2 and Level 3 data, and why does it matter?
Level 2 and Level 3 data are additional transaction details, such as purchase order numbers, tax amounts, and line-item descriptions, that can be submitted with B2B and government card transactions. When this data is included, Visa and Mastercard qualify those transactions at lower interchange rates. For businesses that accept a high volume of corporate purchasing cards or government cards, Level 2 and Level 3 data optimization can meaningfully reduce processing costs.
Should I consider a fee recovery program instead of traditional processing?
It depends on your business type, transaction mix, customer base, and state regulations. Fee recovery programs can eliminate most or all of your processing costs, but they require customer-facing disclosure and are not appropriate for every business or every state. Monument evaluates both options and recommends the approach that fits your operation. Many businesses use traditional processing for some transaction types and a fee recovery program for others.
Can Monument work with my existing POS system?
In most cases, yes. Monument works with a wide range of POS systems and terminals. If your current system is compatible with a better pricing structure or processor, we can often make that change without requiring a system replacement. If a system change would benefit you, we handle the full transition.
